I left Melbourned at 2:45pm for my hour and fifteen minute flight to Tasmania. Pretty non eventful and I arrived...luggage and all...to easily find my shuttle bus waiting right outside the terminal.
I arrived at my beautiful little bunkhouse by 5:30pm...Montecute Boutique Bunkhouse. What a quaint spot...fully renovated last year and run by an amazing couple. Once I got the tour of the place and settled in I decided to take a look around the area.
I am staying in the Battery Park area which is right along the waterfront. It's a very nice area that is very easy to walk around and there is LOTS going on. There are several festivals happening at the moment in Hobart including the Taste of Tasmania.
This is Australia's most popular food festival and it is massive! As I came down the hill I could hear music and see people mingling around. The event area is inside and outside and includes every kind of food you can imagine...with the majority being local. There are also lots of wine stalls, beer, incredible desserts, live music and buskers. There are thousands of people of all ages eating and having a good time...plus it doesn't hurt that the weather is beautiful as well at 25 degrees. And it's free to enter!
When I first entered the building I could not believe the people. I just happened to arrive at the busiest time of course and with my dislike of crowds it really had to be something good for me to stay...and I stayed for 3 hours.
I did a tour of the entire area checking out what they had to offer and finally decided on some Tasmanian Salmon...and I was not disappointed. It really does hold it's own to Atlantic salmon at home...just a little less oily. I got my meal and then decided to top it off with a glass of Tasmanian Merlot. After I finally found a spot to enjoy my meal I went outside to have a seat and take a few photos. As I turned around I hit my wine glass and it spilled all over a family sitting behind me...of course it had to be red! Ooopppss... The mother looked at my wine glass and quickly said, "that will be an expensive spill", but I was more worried about her daughter who got most of it on her and not my empty wine glass. This all happened after only half a glass of wine...not sure what would have happened if I had two!!!
After my mortifying situation I decided to do another walkabout around the area and then grabbed some breakfast foods for the moning at the grocery store. I came back to find an incredible band playing in one of the tents...The Robbinson's. I listened to them for their entire set...the electric guitarist was amazing...and then headed back to my bunkhouse. The event was almost over, but you could hear all the people and music almost my entire walk back. What a great summer event!
I can't wait to come back tomorrow to try some more food, maybe even try an expresso martini and enjoy a beautiful evening on the waterfront...I think it's supposed to be 29 here tomorrow which is very hot for this area.
Until tomorrow...
